Springfield police captain wins $520K jury verdict after suing department for discrimination

SPRINGFIELD — After a weeklong trial and just three hours of deliberations, a Hampden Superior Court jury awarded Police Capt. Reginald Miller more than $520,000 in damages.

Miller, who is Black, sued over racial discrimination and retaliation after arguing he was passed over for a promotion in favor of white candidates for captain while he was in the throes of treatment for a serious form of cancer in 2020.

He ultimately was promoted to captain and serves in the Records Department.
