A Massachusetts man was attempting to post a $4,000 bail for a family member Monday.
But it was a scam.
The Chicopee Police Department had warned residents of the Bitcoin scam. To continue their efforts, the police department went around to Bitcoin ATM’s throughout the city to post warnings. That’s when an officer saw a man at a Shell Station on Grove Street depositing $4,000 into the machine.
Police said he was attempting to post bail for a family member. However, police said it’s highly unlikely any legitimate business will ask for payment in cryptocurrency.
Instead, officials ask that you call the police department before going forward with any transactions.
“Luckily the Detective was at the right place at the right time and was able to intervene, saving this gentleman $4,000,” police wrote.
