85-year-old ID’d as man who was killed by train in Andover, DA says

Zhongli Zhang, 85, of Andover, has been identified as the person who was struck and killed by an Amtrak train on Thursday when he tried to cross the tracks in Andover, according to the Essex County District Attorney’s office.

At around 4:30 p.m., Zhang was struck by the train near 10 Railroad St. near the intersection of with Essex Street, read a press release from the DA’s office.

Zhang was reportedly waiting for a southbound train to pass before he was hit by a northbound Amtrak Downeaster train that was passing through Andover “immediately after the southbound train cleared the intersection,” said the release.

“From initial analysis, the crossing lights and gates appeared to be working for both trains and still in the downward position when Zhang was struck,” according to the DA’s office.

As of Friday, the incident remains under investigation by the Essex County District Attorney’s Office State Police Detective Unit, Amtrak Police, MBTA Transit Police and Andover Police Department, according to the press release.
