CAMBRIDGE — The Celtics’ offseason is seemingly finally winding down after some huge changes to the roster this summer. Jaylen Brown’s supermax extension was the last expected item on the to-do list, and now the team can look forward to recharging their batteries ahead of training camp in a couple months.
That means looking at the construction of the current roster with Kristaps Porzingis now in the fold while Marcus Smart is off to Memphis. Grant Williams is also off to a new home with the Mavericks. Among the many factors includes Malcolm Brogdon, who was heavily rumored to be traded this offseason. He was even the likely guard moved in a three-team deal with the Clippers in the Porzingis deal before that fell apart.

There will likely be some tough feelings there as Brogdon was almost moved to a new team. However, he’s sticking around in Boston now. Joe Mazzulla, talking after Brown’s supermax news conference, spoke about that relationship-building with Brogdon. There are also questions about his forearm injury sustained in the East Finals, but Mazzulla said Brogdon is fine and healthy as far as he knows.
“The organization has had a few conversations,” Mazzulla said. “I think anytime you are in a situation like that and you are in a relationship, you just have to take some small steps into it. There is a healing process, there is a listening process and to see where we are at and where we have to get to.”
Of course, Brogdon was also a regular contributor for the Celtics last season, earning NBA Sixth Man of the Year honors. While he had a tough injury against the Heat, he was a notable off-the-bench scorer for the Celtics all season. It’ll be interesting to see what his role will be like next year on the team now that Smart is gone. But the C’s know they have a starting-caliber guard in Brogdon as someone who can fill multiple needs for the team.
Brogdon is also a professional and veteran, so he knows what how the league operates. With the Celtics looking to compete for a title next season, he’ll look to be a key part of the roster going forward.
“We’ve had some conversations as an organization,” Mazzulla said. “But at the same time, we understand that the situation that it was and as the healing process goes on, we will move forward as well as you can.”
