Springfield’s Mayor Sarno will recognize ‘World Cancer Day’ 4 months after his diagnosis

SPRINGFIELD — The city will recognize World Cancer Day by lighting up the City Hall Campanile Clock Tower and Union Station in blue and orange Tuesday.

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno also will issue a proclamation declaring it World Cancer Day with the Zhu Center for Global Cancer Prevention at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston.

The disease has hit home for the city’s five-term mayor, who announced in October that he was undergoing treatment for an undisclosed type of cancer. Despite his illness, he has not cut back on his schedule and thanked his medical team, as well as Mercy Medical Center, the Sister Caritas Cancer Center and Baystate Medical Center for their work with oncology patients.
