‘Something we will need to keep a close eye on’: Winter storm threat looms for Mass.

Some snow appears headed for Massachusetts this weekend, but forecasters say uncertainty reigns about exactly how much.

Winter storms are brewing from parts of the Midwest to the Appalachians and Atlantic Seaboard — and at least one could make its way to the East Coast, bringing with it snow and icy conditions, AccuWeather senior meteorologist Alex Sosnowski wrote. While there is likely to be enough cold air in place for snow or a wintry mix to hit the Northeast on Sunday, it’s not yet clear just how snowy it might get.

National Weather Service forecasters say the biggest uncertainty concerns whether Massachusetts will see a period of snow, or snow that turns to rain. The exact forecast depends on the track of an anafrontal wave, where precipitation develops behind an area of two air masses of different densities.

How close that wave tracks to the coast will determine whether Massachusetts sess snow or a wintry mix, forecasters wrote.

“We still need another day or two until we have better confidence on the potential outcomes,” forecasters wrote. “This is certainly something we will need to keep a close eye on in the coming days.”
