Want to see the Northern lights? You can Monday and on NYE

People living in parts of the Northeast will get a chance to see the northern lights on Monday and during New Year’s Eve.

A strong, G3 geomagnetic storm will take place across Earth and will be visible in New York and parts of New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. This storm will produce colorful ribbons of light that will stretch across the night sky.

But, according to the administration’s map, the northern lights will miss nearly all of Massachusetts. So Bay State residents eager to see a cosmic light show will have to take a drive up north to do so.

These streaks of light are due to the coronal mass ejection from the Sun on Dec. 29, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Coronal mass ejections are large expulsions of plasma and magnetic fields from the outer layer.

The best time to see the northern lights tonight will be between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time, according to the Boston Globe.

People can see the northern lights on New Year’s Eve during the early morning hours before dawn, the NOAA space weather forecaster Shawn Dahl told the Associated Press.
