17-year-old girl dead, others injured after boat crash on Cape Cod

A 17-year-old girl is dead and others are injured following a boat crash in Sesuit Harbor on Cape Cod late Friday, authorities said.

The girl’s body was found in the water around 11:30 p.m. Friday by the Barnstable County Dive Team with help from the Dennis Fire Department. The discovery followed a search and rescue operation that involved local, state and federal authorities and began after the boat crashed into a jetty in the harbor around 9 p.m., according to a statement from Massachusetts State Police spokesperson David Procopio.

Initial reports indicated some of the six people onboard were injured and one person was missing. At least one passenger, a male teenager, was taken to Cape Cod Hospital with a head laceration, Procopio said in the statement.

The United States Coast Guard, the Barnstable County Dive Team and Sandwich Fire Department marine assets were searching for the girl in the water off Cold Storage Beach in Dennis following the crash in the harbor. Massachusetts State Police patrols and detectives were also helping on the ground. The Dennis Fire Department was coordinating the emergency response, the statement said.

The State Police Marine Unit and Underwater Recovery Unit, along with Massachusetts Environmental Police marine assets, are doing dive operations at the crash site Saturday to search for debris from the boat, according to the statement.

Investigating the girl’s death are the Dennis Police Department, the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office, Environmental Police and State Police, the statement said.

No further information, including the name of the girl, was immediately released to the public by State Police.

Editor’s note: The girl’s body was found by the Barnstable County Dive Team with help from the Dennis Fire Department. Initially, authorities incorrectly stated that her body was found by the U.S. Coast Guard.
