Springfield police warn of cryptocurrency scams

SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield Police Department is warning people about a new cryptocurrency scam that directs its victims to a machine and calls for them to insert and send money.

Residents who receive a phone call from anyone demanding a payment in cryptocurrency or bitcoin is advised to hang up immediately, police said.

Police and the Federal Trade Commission said there are many different variations of cryptocurrency scams and offer a variety of tips to prevent people from becoming victims.
