An off-duty Stoughton police sergeant was attacked by two people in what police said was a road rage incident on Sunday.
Around 1 p.m. Sunday, the Stoughton Police Department said Vashiyra Mason, 20 of Randolph, drove into the oncoming traffic lane and around the off-duty officer’s vehicle on Pine Street. During this, she side-swiped the front of the car, police said. The off duty officer, whose name was not released, followed Mason to a Stop & Shop parking lot.
The off-duty sergeant called the station and reported he was following a car that side-swiped his car and left the scene.
In the parking lot, the off-duty officer identified himself multiple times as a Stoughton Police sergeant “in an attempt to de-escalate the situation,” police said. But Mason began using slurs and hitting the man in the upper body, neck and face.
The off-duty officer then restrained Mason “to prevent her from injuring [themselves],” police said.
Then a 19-year-old Brockton woman, who was a passenger in Mason’s car, began hitting the off-duty officer in the back of his head and neck, police said.
When officers arrived, they saw Mason hitting a woman who was with the off-duty officer.
Mason was arrested and charged with assault and battery, assault and battery on a police officer, disorderly conduct and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.
The 19-year-old, whose identify was not released, will be issued a summons to appear in Stoughton District Court on charges of assault and battery on a police officer, assault and battery, and resisting arrest.
