Ex-Patriots QB has 3 turnovers in 4th quarter in first start for Jaguars

Mac Jones made his first start for the Jaguars on Sunday against the Vikings. And while Sam Darnold didn’t play particularly well and threw three interceptions for Minnesota, Jones struggled mightily in the final six minutes of the game.

The former New England Patriots quarterback turned the ball over three times on three straight possessions — including two interceptions — in the fourth quarter of the Jaguars’ 12-7 loss to the Vikings. Jones went 14-for-22 for 11 yards and two interceptions. He also rushed for for eight yards and a touchdown.

Jones’ start began in a promising direction and included a 70-yard drive capped by a rushing touchdown by the quarterback. But he regressed as the game went on — something that frequently happened while Jones was with the Patriots.

Jones, who appeared in two other games this season prior to his start, made his first start since being traded to Jacksonville by the Patriots in March in place of the injured Trevor Lawrence.

The veteran quarterback is dealing with a shoulder injury. It’s unclear how long Lawrence will be sidelined, but The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported on Sunday that a serious AC joint sprain could keep him out for the remainder of the season. Should Lawrence indeed miss the rest of the year, it’s likely Jones will be the starter.

The Jaguars fell to 2-8 after Sunday’s loss.
