How Patriots’ loss, Week 9 results impact NFL draft order

The Patriots’ overtime loss to the Tennessee Titans combined with the Panthers’ come-from-behind win over New Orleans left New England positioned for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 Draft.

That won’t change regardless of late results. A Jacksonville loss to the Eagles could drop the Jaguars to 2-7, but playing Philadelphia will improve their strength of schedule which is already better than the Patriots.

When the day began the Panthers and Titans, who each had just one win, were in the top two spots, but their wins left New England tied for the worst record in the NFL at 2-7.

For the Patriots, who have Drake Maye in place as their quarterback of the present and future, the draft is more likely about building around him and selecting players for their many other holes.

The top overall pick would put New England in position to consider Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter or one of a handful of defensive linemen and pass-rushers who figure to be in the discussion for the top spot.

It could present an opportunity to trade down to a quarterback-needy team to acquire other picks or assets while picking an offensive tackle or a top wide receiver depending on what they do in free agency.
