Greenfield police want officers in schools; here’s why the school committee doesn’t

Greenfield‘s police department and the city’s mayor are eager to reintroduce school resource officers (SROs) into the city’s schools finances led to the elimination of the SRO program in 2022. But the majority of the school committee is saying no.

While Mayor Virginia Desorgher, Police Chief Todd Dodge and School Committee Member Melodie Goodwin believe having an SRO would be beneficial for school safety, much of the rest of the school committee remains unconvinced that SROs would provide any benefits to students and instead fear that they could be detrimental to student welfare.
