Luke Weaver decided to watch some film after the New York Yankees dropped Game 1 of the World Series when Freddie Freeman hit a walk-off grand slam for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
But it wasn’t film from the game. It was Netflix’s documentary, “The Comeback,” about the 2004 Boston Red Sox team. Weaver told WEEI’s Rob Bradford on the “Baseball Isn’t Boring” podcast that he binged the series when the Yankees were in Los Angeles For Games 1 and 2.
“There was a lot of great tidbits that came from that,” Weaver said. “Honestly, it was a great reference to what’s happening now. It’s two different stories, but a very similar one indeed.”

“It was cool to get the perspective, understand the clubhouse dynamic and understand what it took to get back into it, what they were thinking and what they were saying,” he added. “I think every guy should watch it now. Watch it when you need to, but I think it was cool for me.”
The Red Sox were in a 3-0 hole to the Yankees in the ‘04 American League Championship Series before they accomplished a historic comeback en route to their first World Series win in 86 years. The Yankees found themselves with their backs up against the wall after they lost the first three games of the World Series to the Dodgers before they won Game 4 to keep their season alive and force a Game 5.
“It’s more about understanding, ‘What have guys in the past done to get through this?,’” Weaver told Bradford.
It’s a different but similar situation for New York. No team since the 2004 Red Sox team has erased a 3-0 deficit to come back and win the series. It’s never been done in the World Series, though the Yankees will try to become the first team to do so.
