Springfield officials react to plea for feds’ help with gun violence

SPRINGFIELD — While some local officials praise U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s push to muster federal law enforcement to help crack down on the constant influx of unlawful firearms into the region, others question if that is the best use of resources to fight record gun violence.

Following a record number of homicides committed in 2023 and more than 620 firearms seized by Springfield police over the past 21 months, Warren, D-Mass., sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives on Wednesday asking officials to commit to a five-point plan to better stop gun trafficking into Springfield and Western Mass.
