New cat cafe in Mass. expected to open later this year

The “purr-fect” hangout for cat lovers is coming to Lowell this winter.

The city’s first-ever cat cafe, Lazy Cat Lounge, is expected to open at 177 Merrimack St. in Lowell by mid-December, owner Brandi Jong told MassLive.

The cafe is intended to be “a small, relaxing, home-away-from-home space in the heart of downtown Lowell where people of all ages can work, study and interact with resident and/or adoptable cats,” the cafe’s website reads.

Jong, an animal rescue volunteer for more than 20 years, has wanted to open a cat cafe in her hometown since 2017.

“I love animals of all kinds, but cats have become my focus since I first volunteered for The Pat Brody Shelter for Cats back in 1995,” Jong wrote on the website. “Since about 2009, my family and I have fostered more feral cats, pregnant cats and orphaned kittens than I can count. I really want to create the cat café as a giant foster home where I can dedicate my time to helping as many cats, and people, as I can.”

The space will consist of a cat lounge where people can hang out with friendly felines as well as a separate retail/coffee shop with seating and products for sale.

Caffeinated beverages will be sourced from Atomic Coffee Roasters while local bakery Pizzelle Bakes will provide fresh baked goods.

Guests can book time by the hour in the cat lounge. It costs $14 for adults, $12 for students, seniors and veterans and $10 for children ages 8-12, Jong said.

The owner is hoping to have 6 to 10 cats in the lounge at any given time. Jong plans to host special events specifically for small groups of children under 8 years old.
