Flight departing Boston Logan forced to return to gate due to ‘engine issue’

An “engine issue” on a United Flight leaving Boston Logan International Airport on Monday caused a small grass fire on the runway as it was taxiing, forcing the plane to return to the gate, according to the airline and the Massachusetts Port Authority.

United Flight 2136 headed to Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia was scheduled to leave Boston at 7:10 p.m., according to the flight tracking software FlightAware. The unspecified “engine issue” was “immediately addressed” by United’s local ground crew and emergency responders, the airline said in a statement.

The Boeing 737-800 had 162 passengers and six crew members on board, according to the airline. No passengers or crew members were injured.

The plane did not leave the ground and returned to the gate, where passengers deplaned, according to the airline. Passengers then boarded another plane, which took off around 10 p.m., landing in Virginia a little over an hour later, at 11:07 p.m., according to FlightAware.

Winthrop resident Joe Quigley told WCVB he heard “two loud bangs.”

“It was something that [made] you notice something happened at the airport,” he told the station.
