Clear skies in Mass. could lead to more wind and rain this weekend, forecasters say

While skies should be clear enough to potentially see more northern lights Friday, rain is in the weekend forecast.

With frost possible in the valleys, the National Weather Service anticipates “a chilly start” on Friday before temperatures climb into the mid-60s by the afternoon.

Winds between 10 and 20 mph could keep things cool, though this should wane later in the day, forecasters said.

A cold front is then expected to roll in, along with an increase in winds between 20 to 30 mph along the Cape, the Weather Service wrote. Lows should be in the 40s and 50s. The cold front should then be in full effect on Saturday, bringing with it a dry air mass.

Skies are expected to be clear again on Saturday, with temperatures reaching the mid-60s and possibly into the 70s in southeastern Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island, forecasters said.

Clouds should trickle in Saturday night before increasing Sunday morning ahead of a new system, according to meteorologists.

“A round of rain is possible as early as early Sunday morning with additional rounds moving through Sunday afternoon, overnight and into Monday,” forecasters wrote.

While it’s unclear on the exact timing, forecasters see a chance for moderate rain with no likelihood of a widespread downpour. Rain totals by Monday could yield 1 quarter to just under 3 quarters of an inch, while other models suggest rainfall at around 1 inch or slightly higher. Conditions should dry up between Monday afternoon and evening.

Boston and Springfield could see temperatures in the 50s on Sunday, with both cities expected to have an 84% chance of rain, according to Accuweather. Worcester has the same chance for rain, with a high of 49 degrees expected. Temperatures in all three cities are expected to be back in the 60s on Monday, with Worcester having the lowest high of 60 degrees.

Temperatures are also in flux with the arrival of a warm front, though highs in the 50s are expected, forecasters said.
