When Massachusetts State Police recruits step into the boxing ring, they must wear head protection, groin protection and mouthguards. Experienced boxers are barred from participating.

With those protections in place, retired trooper Todd McGhee put hundreds of recruits through rigorous training, including boxing, for more than a decade. Injuries rarely escalated beyond a bloody nose, he said.
