Quebec City honors Bruins legend, a native son

The Bruins didn’t go back to Quebec City while Patrice Bergeron was still playing. So even though the longtime Boston captain is starting his second year retired, the city took the opportunity to honor him with a short pregame ceremony before the exhibition game between the Bruins and the Kings in the provincial capital on Thursday.

“It was fun just being on the plane today and being around the guys. It was a lot of fun,” Bergeron said. “Being in my hometown was extra special. Great to be here. Brings back a lot of memories.”

It’s been almost 30 years since the Nordiques left Quebec for Denver and became the Colorado Avalanche.

Every time there’s discussion of expansion or relocation in the NHL, Quebec is usually discussed, but never selected. Bergeron hopes eventually the NHL comes back.

“I would love for the Nordiques to come back one day,” he said. “I grew up idolizing some of the players who played. It gives hope and dreams to a younger generation. I can’t say enough good things about having a team here.”

Would he want to be part of the franchise if they do?

“It’s something I would definitely consider. I was a big fan growing up. It would definitely be special,” he said. “But I’ve been part of an organization for 20 years in Boston which has a big place in my heart as well.”

Bergeron said he’s not ready yet, but sounded like a guy who will be working in hockey again eventually.

“I’m too busy right now, with the kids and my wife is back in school,” he said. “I miss the game. Hockey is a passion and something I’ll always love. I enjoy watching it and I enjoy talking about it. Down the road, there’s a chance. I’d like to come back and be involved somewhere, somehow in the game. As of right now, I’m happy. I’m in a good place. It’s good for me to step back and think about what I want to do and really catch up and spend time with the family.”
