Bruins coach thinks team is looking ahead – 4 takeaways from preseason loss

Jim Montgomery didn’t like his team’s performance on Thursday. He thought the Bruins were slow and lethargic, especially early in Thursday’s 4-1 loss to the Kings in Quebec City.

“I thought in the first we were asleep. We weren’t moving our legs. … It wasn’t a very good game by us in that sense,” Montgomery said. “We’re looking at how we’re progressing, not just this game, but throughout camp.”

He thought camp had largely reached the point where the players were starting to look ahead to Tuesday’s opener against the Panthers in Florida.

“I do think a lot of guys are looking forward to Tuesday. For a lot of guys this was their last exhibition game,” he said. “It’s more about timing for veterans. For guys trying to make the team, it’s more about impressing.”

The Bruins have a final exhibition game on Sunday before the final roster is due on Monday.

JONES DEBUTS Max Jones made his first preseason appearance after battling an injury through most of camp. He showed a willingness to be physical and hard to play against. He’s likely competing for one of the last spots on the Bruins’ opening night roster.

KORPISALO GETS FINAL TUNEUP — After a mostly solid camp, Joonas Korpisalo, who Jim Montgomery dubbed his Game 1 goalie, gave up four goals on 26 shots on Thursday.

“I’m feeling rather sharp,” he said. “I wasn’t happy with a couple goals. That’s what preseason is for — getting better. You learn things.”

BERGERON HONORED DURING PREGAME — Bruins legend Patrice Bergeron, who grew neaby as a Nordiques fan, made the trip north with the Bruins and was honored before the game. Bruins forward Patrick Brown, whop scored their only goal, enjoyed being there for it.

“He’s a really impressive guy,” said Brown, who arrived in Boston after Bergeron had retired. “I was a fan my whole life. That was really well-deserved and a really nice thing they did.”
