Mass. State Police identify trooper who died during training exercise

The Massachusetts State Police have announced that Enrique Delgado-Garcia was the department’s recruit who died from a ‘medical crisis’ during defensive tactics training on Thursday.

Delgado-Garcia was a member of the 90th Recruit Training Troop at the Mass. State Police Academy in New Braintree, according to a press release from the department.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to Trainee Delgado-Garcia’s family, loved ones and fellow trainees during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement reads.

The department said that Trainee Delgado-Garcia became unresponsive during a defense tactics training exercise on Sept. 12. The academy’s on-site medical team, including staff members from UMass Medical, responded ‘immediately’ and provided aid to Delgado-Garcia. Medics decided that he required urgent medical care and drove him via ambulance to a local medical facility, where he died.

Mass. State Police said in the release that “Enrique was a fine young man” who not only devoted himself to the 90th Recruit Training Troop but also in his former role as a victim witness advocate in the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office.

“In his short time with the State Police, Enrique demonstrated an extraordinary capacity to learn and a desire to deliver excellent police services to the people of Massachusetts,” the statement reads. “He made an immediate impression on his classmates and the academy staff.”

The department added that Delgado-Garcia “possessed and displayed all the qualities that would have made him an outstanding trooper,” such as having “kindness and compassion, dedication, commitment, willingness to work hard to improve himself and a strong desire to help others.”

“As a department, we will, first and foremost continue to support Enrique’s family and honor his memory,” Mass. State Police said in the release. “We will additionally support our members, trainees and their families as they cope with this heartbreaking loss.”
