13-year-old girl hit by car in Worcester wakes up from coma

A 13-year-old girl who was hit by a car in Worcester in July woke up from her coma on Sunday, according to a GoFundMe.

Ayuen Leet was hit crossing the street at 164 Shrewsbury St. at around 3:51 p.m. Monday, July 29, according to the Worcester Police Department. Worcester Police believe she was hit by a Buick.

By the time police arrived, paramedics, firefighters and an off-duty police officer had begun providing medical aid to the girl, according to a statement from Worcester Police. The girl was taken to a hospital.

The driver involved in the crash remained on scene and was cited for speeding, police told WCVB.

On Sunday, the GoFundMe was updated to say Ayuen had woken up from her coma and was headed to rehab on Tuesday.

“She still has a long road ahead of her and her family is so grateful for the love and support from the community,” the GoFundMe read.

The teen attended Sherwood Middle School and had recently moved to Worcester from South Sudan, according to a GoFundMe.

The teen’s family has taken time off work to support their daughter and now must pay for her medical expenses, according to the post. A GoFundMe was set up to help them financially while meals could be donated through Meal Train.
