What’s opened and what’s closed on Labor Day in Massachusetts?

Labor Day, the federal holiday that celebrates the achievements of workers in the United States, will be Monday, Sept. 2.

Labor Day was originally recognized by labor activists and a couple of states before it became a federal holiday, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Oregon was the first state to pass a law recognizing Labor Day on Feb. 21, 1887. That same year, Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York passed laws to create the holiday. By 1849, 23 more states adopted the Labor Day holiday and on June 28, 1894, Labor Day became an official federal holiday, according to the department.
