BALTIMORE — Before Thursday’s game, Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Nick Pivetta’s velocity would tell the story of his start against the Orioles. Instead, home runs.
Pivetta, who had his last start skipped due to arm fatigue, generally pitched well but gave up two homers (to Gunnar Henderson and Cedric Mullins) in five innings as the Red Sox opened an important road trip with a 5-1 loss at Camden Yards. For Pivetta, the return to the mound was a dissatisfactory one. He gave up only three hits and struck out six but took the loss as the Red Sox fell to 63-57 (and 1-6 against the Orioles this season). Boston is now 4-11 in its last 15 games against the Orioles.
