National Grid fails to fix methane leaks in Boston, environmental group claims

Methane leaks from National Grid’s gas pipelines in the Boston area are killing trees and exacerbating heat islands, according to an environmental advocacy organization.

The Conservation Law Foundation sent a letter to the utility company Tuesday morning accusing National Grid of breaking federal and state environmental regulations by failing to adequately address the leaks.

“National Grid is playing a dangerous and expensive game of whack-a-mole with its ancient, leaky gas pipelines, and families and businesses are taking the hit,” said Heather Govern, vice president of the foundation’s Clean Air and Water Program.
