Sometimes Mac Jones drives Jags ‘crazy,’ but it’s not a bad thing, coach says

Mac Jones is having fun “just being Mac” on the Jacksonville Jaguars. A fresh start appears to have been good for the former New England Patriots quarterback, who told the Florida-Times Union that he’s having fun while his teammates are embracing his personality.

And while the 2021 first-round pick is enjoying his new surroundings, his coach admitted that Jones will sometimes “drive us crazy.”

“He’s going to have a fun time no matter what,” Pederson told reporters earlier this week. “I think that’s just his personality. He’s great in the locker room, great with the guys. Sometimes he drives us crazy with some of the stuff he does or says. But it’s good. I think it’s really good because when he gets in there, it’s business, and he’s a competitor and he loves to compete.”

When asked what kind of things Jones says, Pederson replied, “Just some of the things he says out there. I can’t really repeat them all. It’s pretty interesting.”

Jones was drafted by the Patriots in 2021 and had a strong rookie season that earned him a trip to the Pro Bowl. But he regressed the next two seasons and was eventually benched for Bailey Zappe in the second half of 2023. MassLive revealed that communication between Jones and then-coach Bill Belichick was essentially non-existent before the Week 17 finale.

Now that he’s no longer in New England, Jones has a fresh start in Jacksonville and already seems to be enjoying himself. He’ll be the backup to Trevor Lawrence, but Jones has a chance to restart his career and try to get back on track and back on the field in a capacity that will help his team.
