Recent trade pickup earns first win for Red Sox with strong start

KANSAS CITY — Eleven months ago, James Paxton made his last start of the 2023 season for the Red Sox at Kauffman Stadium. It did not go well. Paxton, pitching through a knee injury and running on fumes, was shelled for six runs and couldn’t get through the second inning.

On Monday, Paxton returned to the same ballpark, and now in his second stint with the Red Sox, having been reacquired days before the trade deadline, was far sharper this time, limiting the Kansas City Royals to two runs on five hits over six innings, earning the win in a 9-5 victory.
