At the close of what will already be a wet week in New England, Tropical Storm Debby and its remnants will bring heavy rainfall to the region, which could see rainfall up to 6 inches over the weekend.
The primary impact of the rain will be the chance for flash and urban flooding, though forecasters note there is a chance for flooding of rivers as a result of the heavy rain. Still, with the storm moving slow on its path up the eastern seaboard, there remains considerable uncertainty about how much rain will fall when it arrives in New England.
In Massachusetts, National Weather Service forecasters project most of the state will see about 4 inches of rain from Debby, though some areas in the western part of the state could see the 6 inches projected for other parts of Southern New England.
Forecasters note that the rainfall forecast includes the precipitation that will begin falling in Massachusetts on Tuesday, meaning the storm likely won’t dump 6 inches of rain all at once.
The weather service said it has “reasonable confidence” the most severe impact from the storm and/or its remnants will come between Friday evening and Saturday evening.
During that period, forecasters say there is a “slight risk” or at least a 15% chance for excessive rainfall. But it’s still not clear where exactly that rainfall would come, as forecasters say the storm’s track is shifting west, putting more parts of the interior of New England in the path for heavy rain as opposed to eastern, coastal areas.
Relief from the rain could finally arrive on Sunday, which, while still cloudy, will be far drier than the previous two days, according to the weather service.
