Hot and humid conditions across Massachusetts will continue on Friday with a chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening, National Weather Service forecasters said.
A heat advisory remains in place for much of the eastern part of the state, stretching along Interstate 90 to the west. Heat indices, or “feels-like” temperatures, will range between 95 degrees and 100 degrees in areas covered by the advisory, forecasters warned.
Forecasters say residents of areas covered by the advisory should “drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.”
“Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing,” forecasters wrote. “Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening.”
In Boston, the projected high temperature on Friday is 92 degrees. In Central Massachusetts, Worcester’s forecast calls for a high of 91 degrees on Friday. And in Western Massachusetts, Springfield is expected to see a high near 93 degrees. It will be cooler in The Berkshires, with the high in Pittsfield projected to reach 88 degrees. In Barnstable on Cape Cod it will be even cooler, with a projected high of 87 on Friday.
But it will feel much warmer thanks to high humidity in all regions of the state, with some, including Springfield, projected to feel like 100 degrees.
Later on Friday afternoon, a round of showers and thunderstorms are expected to drift into Massachusetts, particularly impacting northern parts of the state, according to forecasters. The primary risk caused by the precipitation is locally heavy rainfall, though forecasters said strong gusty winds are also possible.
If the storms strengthen over the course of the day, they could produce 1 to 2 inches of rainfall in a short period of time, according to the weather service.
But the storms won’t bring any relief from the heat. In fact, forecasters extended the heat advisory they had issued, initially set to expire at 7 p.m. on Friday, into Saturday, when temperatures are again expected to range between 85 and 90 degrees.
There will be pockets of dry weather on Saturday, but Bay Staters can expect the day to be bookended by storms, according to the weather service.
