Two Mass. natives help men’s gymnastics end medal drought at 2024 Paris Olympics

Stephen Nedoroscik only competed in one event for the United States men’s gymnastics team. And he certainly made it count.

After qualifying in fifth place, the U.S. men ended a 16-year drought to the delight of the dozens of fans waving American flags who chanted “USA! USA!” throughout the evening.

The Worcester native and pommel horse specialist earned a 14.866 score in the event — one of the best of the night at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Nedoroscik’s performance helped Team USA earn the bronze medal — their first in a team event since 2008.

“I had my coach by my side and he does a great job of taking the nerves out of (me) and he hypes me up,” Nedoroscik said. “But these guys hit every routine before me and I have a statistic — when people hit before me, I also hit. So I went out there and did my job and I enjoyed the moment.”

Stoughton’s Frederick Richard also played a role in Monday’s medal-winning performance. The 20-year-old competed on the rings, parallel bars, horizontal bar and floor exercise. Richard dazzled during each event amassing best team scores of 14.466 (floor exercise), 14.566 (parallel bars) and 14.833 (horizontal bar).

Nedoroscik qualified for the pommel horse finals, while Richard qualified for the individual all-around finals.
