Dak Prescott has spent his first six NFL seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. And while team owner said last year that he believes the quarterback can lead Dallas to a Super Bowl, Prescott will enter the final year of his contract without an extension in sight.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Prescott acknowledged that playing for another team after the 2024 season is a possibility.
“I want to be here,” he said. “But when you look up all the great quarterbacks I’ve watched, they’ve played for other teams. That’s not something to fear. It may be a reality for me one day. It may not be my decision.”

Some quarterbacks that went elsewhere after a lengthy tenure with one team include Tom Brady, who left the New England Patriots after 20 years for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Aaron Rodgers, who went to the New York Jets last year after a an 18-year run with the Green Bay Packers and Peyton Manning, who after 13 seasons with the Indianapolis Colts finished out his career with the Denver Broncos.
It’s not out of the realm of possibility that Prescott finds himself quarterbacking another team in 2025, but it wouldn’t be because there was lack of effort on either side to get a deal done for him to remain with the Cowboys.
“I say it’s a two-way street. They have wants, I have wants,” he told reporters, via NFL Network’s Jane Slater. “… This is a business and obviously I want to be here. Talking about growing up, this is where I became a man. But at the end of the day, it’s a business.”
For what it’s worth, Jones said Thursday that he doesn’t see 2024 being Prescott’s last year in Dallas. For now, Prescott and the Cowboys shift their focus to 2024 as they try to build off a 12-5-0 season and return to the playoffs.
