The Red Sox held their collective breath for a moment in the sixth inning, fearing the worst for Rafael Devers. But the All-Star third baseman is fine after injuring his shoulder on a diving play.
With no outs in the sixth, Devers, diving to his left on an Ezequiel Tovar line drive single, writhed in pain on the infield dirt as manager Alex Cora and a team trainer came out to him. Devers eventually got up and decided to stay in the game, which the Red Sox were leading 6-0.
The injury, at first, appeared to look like the one Trevor Story suffered in Anaheim on April 5 when he dislocated his shoulder and fractured the glenoid rim diving for a ball. But Devers survived the scare and won’t miss any time. The shoulder he landed on was the right one and not the left shoulder he has been managing throughout the season.
“Obviously, the worst, right? We’ve been through this path before,” said manager Alex Cora when asked what he was thinking when he saw Devers go down (via NESN). “But he’s OK. He said he just jammed it. He took some vicious hacks in the last at-bat. He said he’ll be ready for tomorrow.”
Devers, who doubled twice in Boston’s 6-0 win over the Rockies, fielded three grounders and made three throws without issue in the late innings. He should be in the lineup when the Sox and Rox face off in the series finale at 3:10 p.m. ET on Wednesday afternoon.
