GenXers rejoice: ‘The NeverEnding Story’ back in theaters for 40th anniversary

“The NeverEnding Story,” the popular 1984 film that follows a young boy’s quest to save the mythical land Fantastica from an evil force called “The Nothing,” will be playing in theaters across Massachusetts this weekend in celebration of its 40th anniversary.

Major movie theaters like AMC and Showcase, as well as independent theaters, will screen this iconic 1980s movie throughout the Bay State July 21 and July 22.

The film, which quickly became a cult classic, was originally based on a fantasy novel of the same name by German author Michael Ende, according to Variety. At the heart of the film is Bastian Balthasar Bux — Barret Oliver — an awkward, but imaginative boy, who flees a group of bullies by hiding in a nearby bookshop. He discovers a book called “The NeverEnding Story” about a hero named Atréyu destined to save Fantastica and its empress from “The Nothing.” However, Bux soon learns that he’s more than just an avid reader of the book after he’s transported to the mythical land Fantastica.
