SPRINGFIELD — On a Sunday morning just over a year ago, Despina Costa was getting ready for church when she got a call that lightning had struck her beloved St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in the north end of Springfield.
She and her husband rushed to the scene, and with other members of the church community, surveyed the damage. Overnight, a lightning bolt had blasted a massive block of brownstone off the 80-foot bell tower and through the church’s slate roof, splitting a main beam and damaging the choir loft before landing on the ground.
