Springfield walking tour will explore story of downtown restaurants

SPRINGFIELD – When Frigo’s Gourmet Foods opened 75 years ago, it joined at least 10 Italian markets in the South End.

There were plenty of customers to go around, since Frigo’s catered to families from northern Italy. Different parts of the country have distinct culinary traditions. Each market specialized in a different region, said Joe Frigo, who is the third generation owner.
