As a kitten named James fights having to swallow a pill, one of the 50 highly trained volunteers reassures the small animal it’s for his own good. Nearby, another volunteer is putting eye drops in a kitten’s eyes. And behind them, dozens of kittens sleep or play in rows of crates.
All the kittens are sick and part of the newly reopened Kitten Intensive Care Unit (KICU) at Dakin Humane Society in Springfield. It’s the only KICU in New England.
