New traditional European bakery coming to Newbury Street in Boston this summer

A traditional European bakery with a long history in Central Massachusetts is looking to stay true to its roots as it opens its second location in one of Boston’s trendiest areas: Newbury Street.

“I really want to grow into the community in Boston,” Nathan Nguyen, one of the owners of The Black Rose Bakery in Westborough, told MassLive.

“Boston’s a big part of my life,” said Nguyen, who used to work in the city and visits often to see friends. “It’s always had a spot in my heart, and I just think that it’s just a great place to move to.”

The new Black Rose Bakery is expected to open at 303 Newbury St. at the end of July or early August, Nguyen said.

The new location will serve everything from the bakery’s signature cookies and cannolis to mini-pastries and cakes.

Specific to the Boston bakery will be sandwiches and drinks such as bubble tea, coffee and espresso. The new store will also have indoor and outdoor seating, unlike its original location.

“It’s a way more modern space,” Nguyen said. “Our store here is more European-esque, if you will. So we’re a little more fitting to the younger college students, just the whole family, tourist crowd. It’s a little bit of everything.”

While the bakery will occupy one of Boston’s trendiest neighborhoods, Nguyen said the new Black Rose will stay true to its traditional European fare, which his family has worked hard to master.

“That has a lot of sentimental value to our family,” Nguyen said, adding that moving to Boston will be “a great way to get the name out.”

Nguyen’s aunt, Long Rocheford, who has been a baker since he was a baby, began her baking journey in 1998 at Gerardo Sarli’s bakery, Black Rose Bakery’s website reads.

Rocheford would go on to study French pastries in Chicago and Europe before coming back to Massachusetts to continue her work with Sarli. After seven years, Sarli handed the Westborough bakery to Rocheford in 2022.

Rocheford then named the bakery after her mother, Rose, thus The Black Rose was born. Last year, Nguyen asked his aunt about opening another store in Boston, and she gave him her blessing.

Looking further down the road, Nguyen has hopes the family can open another Black Rose Bakery in either the Seaport or Fenway neighborhoods of Boston.
