This woman’s Black ancestor in Mass. fought for independence — for the nation

WEST SPRINGFIELD — Jocelyn Jones Arnold is bringing to light the untold history of her ancestors from the Revolutionary and Civil War eras, honoring a legacy once obscured and tarnished by racism and prejudice.

By day, Jones Arnold is a consultant for nonprofit communities in Philadelphia. In her spare time, she is leaning into genealogical and historical research with the Sheffield Historical Society on its After Elizabeth Freeman project.
