NBA insider defends Bronny James pick, doesn’t want to hear about ‘nepotism’

LeBron James will get the opportunity to play with son after the Los Angeles Lakers drafted his son, Bronny James, on Day 2 of the 2024 NBA Draft. It was a move many predicted, and one that was met with criticism.

While some believe LeBron had everything to do with getting his son to Los Angeles and that Bronny is simply a product of nepotism, Adrian Wojnarowski wants it known that this is nothing new in the world of the NBA.

“I don’t want to hear the charges, people talking about nepotism,” Wojnarowski said on ESPN on Thursday. “The NBA is full of nepotism. The ownership level, front offices, coaching. I don’t want to hear about it all of a sudden because Bronny James’ father plays for the Lakers. It is rampant in this league.”

LeBron has never been shy about making his voice heard regarding playing with his son once he was eligible.

The 19-year-old declared for the draft in April after one season with the USC Trojans. Upon declaring, it was reported that Bronny also entered the transfer portal. But he decided to forgo the remainder of his college eligibility.

Bronny averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 25 games (six starts) for USC. The 6-foot-4 guard also averaged 19.4 minutes per game, shooting 36.6% from the field.

In July 2023, Bronny suffered a cardiac arrest during a summer workout at Galen Center. The 19-year-old was cleared to return to basketball in November, and made his debut with USC in December after missing the first eight games.

But nepotism or no nepotism, Bronny and LeBron made NBA history as the first father-son duo to be on the same team.
