Red Sox won’t have All-Star starter for second straight year; 4 players in mix

The Red Sox won’t have an All-Star starter in Texas next month — marking the first time in two years that’s the case.

Zero members of the Red Sox are finalists who moved on to the second phase of All-Star voting, which determines the American League starting lineup for the Midsummer Classic at Globe Life Field on July 16. The starting lineup for the AL will consist of winners of Phase 2 of the fan vote, which concludes at 12:00 p.m. ET on Weds., July 3. The league takes the top two vote-getters at each position (and the top five outfielders) for the second and final round.

Rafael Devers (898,719 votes) finished third among AL third baseman behind Cleveland’s José Ramírez and Baltimore’s Jordan Westburg. Catcher Connor Wong was fourth with Baltimore’s Adley Rutschman and Kansas City’s Salvador Perez and Cleveland’s Bo Naylor finishing third. Triston Casas was seventh among first baseman, Vaughn Grissom was ninth among second baseman and Ceddanne Rafaela was ninth among shortstops. Masataka Yoshida was eight among designated hitters. Jarren Duran, an All-Star candidate, was 16th among outfielders with Wilyer Abreu (19th) and Tyler O’Neill (20th) getting votes as well.

The Red Sox had zero All-Star starters last year but Devers started at third base in both 2021 and 2022. Shortstop Xander Bogaerts also started at shortstop in 2021. In 2019, designated hitter J.D. Martinez was Boston’s only starter. In 2018, when the Sox won the World Series, there were three starters — Martinez, right fielder Mookie Betts and pitcher Chris Sale. Last season marked the first time since 2019 the Sox have had no All-Star starters.

Devers seems like a lock to make the team — for the third time — as a reserve. Right-hander Tanner Houck is also a certainty to make the club. Wong and Duran both have strong candidacies to make it as reserves when the player ballot is revealed on July 7.
