Red Sox OF hits two homers in rehab game as activation nears in Cincinnati

TORONTO — Wilyer Abreu looks ready to rejoin the Red Sox.

The rookie outfielder, who has been out since June 3 after spraining his right ankle falling down the dugout steps at Fenway Park, homered twice for the WooSox in his second rehab game at Triple-A on Wednesday night. In the first inning, he took launch for a solo shot off Columbus lefty Randy Labaut. In the eighth, he hit another solo shot off reliever Tanner Burns.

Abreu is expected to rejoin the Red Sox in Cincinnati for this weekend’s series against the Reds. His performance Wednesday at Polar Park could potentially accelerate his timeline by a day.

Abreu will play again for the WooSox on Thursday with the Red Sox off. Worcester beat Columbus, 10-4, on Wednesday.

“There’s a good chance he’ll DH tomorrow,” Cora said. “We’re contemplating if it’s going to be Friday or Saturday. But so far, so good.”

Abreu, who is in his first full major league season, has been an exciting member of the Red Sox so far in 2024. Through 53 games before getting hurt, he hit .272 with six homers, 14 doubles, 22 RBIs and an .829 OPS. The Red Sox will face something of a logjam when he does return with fellow outfielders Jarren Duran, Tyler O’Neill, Ceddanne Rafaela and Rob Refsnyder all producing at the plate. Shortstop David Hamilton is hitting so well that it will be hard to move him off his position to accommodate Rafaela; it’s possible either Rafaela or Hamilton plays some second base to stay in the lineup when Abreu comes back.
