Police investigating ‘prank’ after Mass. student possibly ingested rubbing alcohol

After a student possibly ingested rubbing alcohol, the Wilbraham Police Department is investigating if it was part of a larger “prank.”

Hampden-Wilbraham Superintendent of Schools John A. Provost said in statement that the school district was aware of Facebook posts claiming high school students “were ‘poisoned’ as a ‘prank.’”

He said he’s only aware of one student who may have ingested the rubbing alcohol.

“I want to assure you that student safety is our first priority,” he wrote. “We are actively working with the Wilbraham Police Department to determine the facts surrounding this incident.”

As of Thursday, Wilbraham Police Department had no further information.

Drinking rubbing alcohol can be especially dangerous. It can cause abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, headaches and more.

“Rubbing alcohol is very dangerous to consume at any quantity,” according to American Addiction Centers. “Massive ingestion is especially risky and can cause depressed cardiovascular function, internal bleeding, organ damage, shock, and even death.”

Provost asked that anyone with information to contact school administration or police. People can also make an anonymous report here.
