NBA contender has ‘strong chance’ to poach big name from Celtics operations after Finals (report)

The Boston Celtics still need one more win to lock up the NBA Finals, but rumblings about offseason changes have already begun.

According to NBA reporter Marc Stein, the Los Angeles Clippers have “strong interest” in hiring Jeff Van Gundy to their coaching staff. Van Gundy, a household name from his days as a TV commentator, currently serves as a senior consultant under basketball operations.

Stein reports that the Clippers have a “strong chance at succeeding” in adding Van Gundy to head coach Tyronn Lue’s staff after the NBA Finals are over.

There’s also a chance that Van Gundy takes a coaching job here in Boston. Last week, Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla floated the idea that Van Gundy could move to the coaching staff after this season.

The Celtics are set to make some changes to their coaching staff this offseason. Assistant Charles Lee has already been hired as the new head coach of the Charlotte Hornets while assistant Sam Cassell remains in the mix for jobs across the league.

As MassLive’s Brian Robb notes, Van Gundy joined the Celtics in October and split his time between Boston and its G-League affiliate working with basketball operations — but has been a “steady presence” at practice during the team’s playoff run.

The 62-year-old Van Gundy is a familiar name for many basketball fans thanks to his run with ESPN calling NBA games from 2007-2023.

Before that, Van Gundy spent decades as a coach in college and the pros. He worked as the head coach of the New York Knicks from 1996-2001 and the Houston Rockets from 2003-2007.
