Springfield superintendent candidates questioned about budget, parent involvement, career initiatives in first interview round

SPRINGFIELD — The three superintendent candidates answered questions about teacher retention, how to deal with a poorly-performing principal and preparing students in school and preparing them for college or a career Wednesday night.

About 100 people including students, teachers, parents and a few who said they don’t have much connection to the schools, were given an opportunity to ask questions to the three finalists. Each were given an hour to field queries from residents.

The open questioning will be followed on Thursday with the School Committee holding formal interviews of the three finalists starting at 5 p.m. followed by a scheduled vote by the committee. Both events were at Van Sickle Academy.
