Why billions of gallons of diluted sewage ended up in Mass. waterways last year

SPRINGFIELD — Amid the midday rain Thursday, an estimated 8 million gallons of sewage mixed with rainwater flowed from the city’s sewer system into the Connecticut River near downtown.

Stay out of the water for two days to avoid bacteria and pollution, an alert from the city warns, saying that communities downriver, like Agawam, West Springfield and Longmeadow, are also affected.
