Karen Read trial: More witnesses take the stand on Friday

Testimony in the trial of Karen Read, a Mansfield woman charged in the death of her Boston police officer boyfriend, John O’Keefe, continues Friday at 9 a.m.

Read, 44, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of O’Keefe, who was found cold to the touch and unresponsive on Jan. 29, 2022, outside of a home in Canton.

Norfolk County prosecutors say Read struck O’Keefe with her SUV while driving intoxicated. Read’s attorney, David Yannetti, said during the trial’s opening statements that her car never struck O’Keefe and that others are to blame for his death.

The trial is taking place in Dedham’s Norfolk County Superior Court.

The trial resumes Friday after a break on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the defense wrapped up a contentious cross-examination of witness Jennifer McCabe, one of two women who were with Read when she found O’Keefe’s body outside of 34 Fairview Road.

The defense questioned McCabe about a phone extraction report that stated she Google searched “hos long to die in the cold” at 2:27 a.m. on Jan. 29, 2022.

“That is not reality,” McCabe said.

Kerry Roberts, a close friend of O’Keefe, also took the stand and gave emotional testimony about the discovery of O’Keefe’s body and what happened after he was brought to the hospital.

Laura Sullivan and Marietta Sullivan both testified on Wednesday as well, and they described a trip to Aruba that included Read and O’Keefe in December 2021. Details of an incident inside of a hotel lobby where shared.

“Ms. Read’s head snapped up and she very loudly told me to go [expletive] myself across the lobby,” Marietta Sullivan said. “I said, ‘Yeah, [expletive] you too,’ and walked away.”

This story will be updated throughout Friday when testimony continues at 9:00 a.m.
