World’s No. 1 golfer ‘spent time stretching in jail cell’ before teeing off

Scottie Scheffler still found ways to get loose despite getting arrested early Friday morning.

“I feel like my head is still spinning. I can’t really explain what happened. I did spend some time stretching in a jail cell,” the world’s No. 1 golfer told reporters after the second round of the PGA Championship. “That was a first for me. That was part of my warmup.”

Scheffler finished the second round 5-under, putting him at 9-under for the tournament hours after getting arrested.

He was arrested as he was attempting to get to Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky around 5:45 a.m. The area Scheffler was driving into was specifically designated for for golfers. He tried to navigate around the backup due to a pedestrian being struck and killed by a shuttle bus.

ESPN’s Jeff Darlington witnessed the incident, and got video of Scheffler being led away in handcuffs. Darlington reported that Scheffler was instructed to stop. And when he didn’t an officer “attached himself” to Scheffler’s car as he continued to drive 10-20 yards.

The 27-year-old is facing second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.

Scheffler got to Valhalla Golf Club about 35 minutes before he teed off at the second round of the PGA Championship.
