Black Aces are each team’s postseason practice squad. NHL legend Eddie Shore coined the term when he owned the AHL’s Springfield Indians. The group works out together, usually after the varsity, to stay ready in case injuries prompt roster moves. The Bruins had already called up Patrick Brown, who played for them in Game 1, Jayson Megna and emergency goalie Brandon Bussi before Game 5. Nine other players are now joining them.
The Bruins added six forwards, two defensemen and a goalie:
- Trevor Kuntar (C)
- Marc McLaughlin (C)
- Georgii Merkulov (C)
- Anthony Richard (LW)
- Oskar Steen (C)
- Joey Abate (LW)
- Michael Callahan (D)
- Ian Mitchell (D)
- Michael DiPietro (G)
Steen (34 games), Mitchell (13), Richard (nine), Merkulov (four), and McLaughlin (one) have all spent prior time in the NHL for Boston this season.
The Bruins trail the Panthers 3-2 in their second-round playoff series, Game 6 is Friday at 7 p.m. at TD Garden.
