Chester still ‘On Track’ for 33rd anniversary event

A special feature of the 33rd anniversary Chester On Track will be a “Visit with Leonard” table at the railroad station, featuring this year’s parade marshal Leonard Alexander, who will share memories of working at the Chester Roundhouse as a callboy when he was in high school and tell of his experience changing the teeth on the Chester granite saw across the street.

“Those two things will give him plenty visitors want to hear. The roundhouse in Chester held pusher engines to assist trains up the mountain, and the saw, within sight of the station, is drawing a lot of early industrial interest as it is brought back into the local consciousness through restoration,” said David L. Pierce, event chairman.

This year’s Chester On Track marks the 183nd year since the Western Railroad was opened. It will take place May 18 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. throughout town with a parade at 10 a.m.
